Asian leaders were in visionary mood at the summit in Cemu in Phillipines .Manmohan Singh promised lot of things such as open skies deal with ASEAN,India-ASEAN FTA and aligning tax rates.India should take greater interest in ASEAN summit after WTO had stalled.among SAARC and ASEAN there is no disagreement who is the better. But Indians leaders are great in taking shots in air at foreign soils are found wanting in its implementation in back home.
Take the case of SEZ policy. It was a great concept but what happened after a while, vested interest of politicians started to come into the picture.A pan-asian free trade agreement is great in theory but apart from IT and high end manufacturing India lacks in every other department.Lot of hues and cries will be made when it will be implemented.Instead of concentrating on infrastructure we are concentrating on reservation in private sector. Its tying the hands of a crippled man and forcing him to run an obstacle race.We should be working on agricultural reforms and permitting FDI in education. The homework ought to be done before plunging for ambitious forays in neighbourhood.
